When we think of hip muscles, we usually think of the hip flexors in front and the big butt muscle, the gluteus maximusin the back. There are, however, six smaller muscles that have significant roles in hip integrity, movement of the leg and hip, as well as creating a lift through the pelvis. These are the deep six muscles and they are very much worth getting to know.
Whether you hit the gym for leg day a couple times a week, or squeeze in a few butt exercises while you're working out at home, you're probably pretty confident that you're strengthening your glutes from all angles, right? Squatting, lunging, and deadlifting are all really effective, go-to workouts that help strengthen your lower body and, of course, more specifically, your booty. However, the best exercises for your butt might not be the ones you know and love to hate so much — especially because they're likely neglecting a really important muscle that's often forgotten about.
Having strong pelvic floor muscles gives us control over the bladder and bowel. Weakened pelvic floor muscles mean the internal organs are not fully supported and you may have difficulty controlling the release of urine, faeces poo or flatus wind. Common causes of a weakened pelvic floor include childbirth, obesity and the associated straining of chronic constipation.
The gluteus maximus also known collectively with the gluteus medius and minimusas the gluteal musclesand sometimes referred to informally as the "glutes" is the main extensor muscle of the hip. It is the largest and most superficial of the three gluteal muscles and makes up a large portion of the shape and appearance of each side of the hips. Its thick fleshy mass, in a quadrilateral shape, forms the prominence of the buttocks. Its large size is one of the most characteristic features of the muscular system in humans,  connected as it is with the power of maintaining the trunk in the erect posture.
The answer matters. The gluteus maximus is the largest of the three and primarily works to extend the hips. Meanwhile, the medius and minimus, which form the side butt, are tasked with stabilizing the hips as they extend, although they do play a small part in extension.
